How To Install a Sway Bar Disconnect

Many people buy Jeep Wranglers for their great off-road abilities. Wranglers are great off-road vehicles off the lot, but to make them even better a lot of people make a range of Jeep modifications. One of the most popular mods is the installation of a sway bar disconnect system.

People who like to take their Jeep Wranglers out on off-road adventures need their suspensions to be a little looser. There are several ways to make a suspension looser, but one of the easiest is to release the sway bar underneath the Jeep when needed. Releasing the bar will allow the suspension to travel further. This extra travel that is created by this Jeep modification will allow the vehicle to maneuver over rough terrain in a smoother and safer manner.

Sway bar disconnect kits are available from most places that specialize in Jeep modifications. They are also a very easy to install for people who know their way around and under the body of a Jeep.

The first step in the process of this particular Jeep modification is to remove the factory sway bar link. In order to do this the bolt at the top of the sway will need to be removed. The next step will be to unbolt and remove the bottom of the sway bar link. Once that link is removed the next step will be to pull down on the boot and remove the top.

After the factory sway bar link has been removed the next step will be to bolt the sway bar link top using the tools that come with most sway bar disconnect kits for Jeep Wranglers. Once that is completed the next step will be to install the bottom sway bar mount.

Now the top of the disconnect will be mounted. Once this has been completed the next step will be to find a good location for the bottom of the disconnect. It is a good idea to find a place that will be out of the way when the sway bar is disconnected. After the place has been decided on a hole will need to be drilled and threaded. Once the threading is completed a bolt can then be installed. The final step in this Jeep modification will be to grease up the grease fitting and insert the lower pin.

With the disconnect system installed properly the Jeep Wrangler owner will now be able to easily disconnect the bar when they hit the trails and reconnect it when they head back on the highway. Keep in mind that driving around town without a sway bar properly connected can be very dangerous.

As most Wrangler owners know, a simple Jeep modification to their vehicle is a lot of fun, but at the end of the day all the work needs to be done properly. People who have never worked on a car before may want to take their Jeep to a local mechanic who specializes in installation of Jeep replacement parts. Or the other option is to have a buddy who is more schooled in Jeep repairs help out and explain how it is done.

Four Wheel Drive Recoveries Without the Risk

The number of people that I have seen in the last few years recovering a four wheel drive in a manner that is unsafe is astounding. Recovering a four wheel drive incorrectly has resulted in a substantial number of deaths and serious injuries. Unfortunately education for recovering four wheel drives correctly isn't enforced enough! The most risk in four wheel drive recoveries is when a second vehicle is involved. If you are using a snatch strap or winch, you need to take extra precautions to ensure that people stay safe! A broken snatch strap or winch cable has the potential to kill someone, and yet people are blasé so regularly.

Snatch straps and winch cables hold a significant amount of energy, and if they break all of that energy is released at once. A snatch strap will easily fly from one vehicle to the next in under a second, and there is no way you can get out of the way. As a general rule, everyone except both drivers in a recovery needs to be at least 20 metres away. This ensures that even if the strap or cable does break, no one is in range of the deadly missile. Secondly, make sure that dampeners are used. Two are ideal, and make sure that they aren't very heavy. A towel works extremely well. These are designed to stop the cable or strap from flying in the event that they snap.

Thirdly, make sure that you remove any dirt possible before trying to recover another four wheel drive. By spending 5 minutes on the shovel you can reduce a massive amount of stress put on the recovery. I suggest that no shackles are used in a recovery (where possible) as they are heavy weights that cause a lot of damage when something goes wrong. Don't ever use a tow ball to recover off. Tow balls are designed for towing trailers, and they are not designed for shock force, which is exactly what you do when you pull hard on it. There have been a number of tow balls snap in recent years resulting in serious injuries. I have seen them literally go through a tire; what do you think they are going to do if you are standing in the way?

The last piece of advice I can give is to take your time, think about the risks and consequences and make decisions that are going to get you unstuck, without injuring anyone or doing damage to your vehicles!

Out of All the SUV Models of 2012, Which One Is the Best?

There is no point in picking out the best SUV model of 2012, because the "best" depends on the customer. Since every driver has different needs and preferences, what the "best" is for one person may not be the "best" for another.

The price is the biggest consideration of most people when deciding on which car is the best for them. But price should be coupled with reliability. It's unreasonable to buy a cheap one that will only break down in a few years. There are known brands and models that offer efficiency at a good price. Today, it is important to go after fuel-efficient and safety-feature packed cars.

One of the most reliable gauges when choosing an SUV or any vehicle is the mileage. In fact, the mileage indicates whether the car becomes economical in the long run. There are several models that come to mind when high mileage is concerned. One is the Lexus RX450h, which has a mileage of 32 mpg. Aside from considerable good distance, it also has luxury features, which means that it's not your inexpensive option. The Ford Escape Hybrid runs with a 31 mpg mileage.

Not everyone wants a good distance, though. Some people prefer other things, like the size. Many people like mid-size cars, like the Buick Enclave, which runs with 24 mpg along highways. There are other cars with better maneuverability. Other vehicles considered to be one of the best SUV models of 2012 is the Mazda CX-9. It has approximately the same mileage as the Buick Enclave. Drivers say that the most notable feature of the Mazda CX-9 is its cargo room.

The best choice may be an SUV with both value and efficiency. One of the SUVs that come to mind is the 2012 Kia Sportage. Kia has been dubbed as the twin of Toyota, which is known as the leader in design and fuel economy. Kia matches what Toyota can offer at a lower price. Hence, people after savings should consider Kia. The Kia Sportage runs in the city with a mileage of 22 mpg, and along highways with a mileage of 29 mpg. Its towing power has been boosted by its turbo charge.

Another SUV that rings bells when it comes to value is the Subaru Outback, whose 2012 version comes at a very friendly price. The 2012 Subaru Outback comes with great savings for its class. The 21/27 mpg rating comes with an improved interior.

The 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan cannot be ignored as well, due to its remarkable design and space. The Volkswagen Tiguan is a strong contender of Kia and Subaru, although it lacks the power of the other two. Volkswagen offers safety features, but what makes it more notable is its maintenance-free reputation. While its mileage is not its most noteworthy characteristic, its sturdiness probably is.

The final decision is yours to make. There are other vehicles not mentioned in this article that are formidable contenders. However, keep in mind that there is no perfect SUV. Others may reign in mileage, while others reign in safety features. Some are the fastest, and some flaunt stability.

No matter what this article says, the best judge would be you. After all, you will be the owner of the vehicle, and no one else. So, if a certain automobile doesn't feel good during the test drive alone, then it's probably not the right one for you.

Why You Should Consider Choosing a Diesel Engine Vehicle

While choosing what vehicle to buy, you may opt to buy one that with diesel engine. Unlike in the old days when they were considered to be for very powerful machines, the diesel engines are coming into use these days and some motorist will opt for them than the petrol engine.

With the current technology, the shortcomings of the noisy, smelly old diesel engine have been reduced and it has become more users friendly. Like in the gasoline powered cars and SUVs, diesel powered vehicles are fully equipped with modern safety features like safety locks, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and stability.

Diesel engines used to be considered as best suited for crude manual transmissions; they have now been modernized to be used for the normal street car. The transmissions have also been automated and have greater speed and improved fuel efficiency without losing the convenience of an automatic touch.

The larger vehicles with a larger passenger capacity like the SUV work best with the diesel engine since they are heavier. The devices are better suited for heavy tasks than the petrol engines.

The diesel engine burns less fuel than petrol engine while performing the same task, due to the engines higher temperature of combustion and greater expansion ratio. They have low voltage electrical ignition system, resulting in high reliability and easily adaptable to damp environments. The life of these engines is about twice as long as that of the petrol engine due to the enhanced strengths of the parts used. The diesel fuel has better lubrication properties than petrol which contribute to the good state of the engine.

Diesel is also considered safer than petrol. While petrol will create flammable vapor in the open and easily explode, diesel fuel will only burn in the open air using a wick and does not explode. Having this engine is therefore safer for your vehicle; it's less likely to explode in case it's involved in an accident.

The diesel fuel engines generate less heat in cooling and exhaust. The content of the carbon monoxide in the exhaust fumes is minimal, reducing carbon monoxide poisoning chances to the motorist and the other people who may inhale. Since the diesel engine combustion is higher, there are more exhaust fumes coming out of the exhaust. Getting the best exhaust systems for your vehicle will enhance the emission of the exhaust fumes form the engine and hence improved performance.

There are suppliers like magnaflow who specialize with diesel exhaust systems for vehicles like the Dodge, Chevrolet and the Ford. Getting these engines is not only safe but gets the best performance from your vehicle.

Save a Friend With Jeep Winches

Strangers to the Jeep culture often wonder why they see Jeep winches attached to Wranglers, CJs and Cherokees. Most people think they are just for show, but the fact is that winches are a very important tool for people who love to trail ride or rock climb.

Of course the main goal for a day trip is to not get stuck, but naturally Jeep lovers tend to push the envelope. This envelope pushing often leads to people getting stuck in places that they don't want to get stuck. If another friend has Jeep recovery gears they can easily get the stranded Jeep safely to better ground.

People looking for a manufacturer of great Jeep winches should look at the line-up of Rugged Ridge winches. These are some of the most durable and useful winches sold on the market today. A great winch is the Heavy Duty 10500 pound winch that comes with a steel cable. This is one of the most affordable Jeep recovery products on the market.

The 10500 by Rugged Ridge is better built than any other winch in its price range. It comes with a powerful 6.6 horsepower motor which is capable of pulling up to 10,500 pounds. It is built with all stainless steel hardware ensuring that it will not succumb to tough environmental elements most Jeep owners put their vehicles through. This model is available with either a synthetic rope or a steel cable depending on the user's needs.

Rugged Ridge also makes a smaller 8500 winch that has a smaller 5.5 horsepower engine. For the most part the two products are the same; the only real difference is the fact that the smaller of the two can only handle about 8,500 pounds of weight. For people who are only pulling people out of ditches or quarries this winch is plenty strong. This model comes a durable all-weather cable remote that is 12 feet long which allows the user to stand clear as the utilize the winch.

When purchasing any of the Rugged Ridge Jeep winches it is also important to purchase the proper accessories that are need to help protect the wince from the elements and also to make sure nothing is missing when the winch is actually needed to save the day. This is why we recommend getting a winch cover and extra winch rope or steel cable and a full array of d-rings and other fasteners.

Most of Jeep winches are easy to mount to most vehicles, but it will be important to either get a bumper kit with a winch mount or to buy a separate winch mount for the particular Jeep bumper configuration.

Transform Your Jeep Cherokee

There are a lot of people out there who want to know what Jeep Cherokee parts are essential when transforming the vehicle from an everyday commuter to an off-road superstar. Below is a definitive guide to what things a person will need to completely change their Jeep.

Body Armor

One of the first Jeep Cherokee accessories a person will need when transforming their vehicle will be to equip it with some body armor. They will want to make sure they get guards for their tail-lights to protect them from stray branches and big rocks. They will also want to equip their vehicles metal side plates to help protect the body of the Jeep from getting damaged when traversing through rough terrains.

Bumpers and Guards

People who plan on spending a lot of time riding off-road will want to replace the stock Jeep bumpers with more sturdy bumpers and guards to help protect the body as well as the engine from seriously rough outings. Some of these Jeep Cherokee bumpers and guards are designed to keep mud and snow from clogging up the front grill. If the owner plans on attaching a winch to the Jeep then they will want to look for a front bumper that has pre-drilled holes for easy winch mounting.

Safari Bars

There are a lot of people who think that safari bars are just used by people who want to look cool, but the fact of the matter is that Safari bars serve more than aesthetic purpose. Safari bars are a must have Jeep Cherokee part for any serious trail rider because they allow the driver to easily see his or her surrounding environment. No need to stick their head out a window to see what they are sitting over. With Jeep safari bars all they have to do is look down to see what sort of situation they have gotten themselves into.

Snorkel

Another important Jeep Cherokee accessory to have is a snorkel. Some people think snorkels are over kill, but at the end of the day they can help make a good trip even better. Snorkels can easily be attached to the Cherokee and can save the owner the headache of flooding the engine in the middle of a stream. Drivers with snorkels know that there is nowhere they cannot go.

Seat Belts

Jeep Cherokees come with adequate seat belts for people who spend their time on a daily commute or running their everyday errands, but these types of seatbelts are not good for people who are trying to transform their vehicles to off-road superstars.

People looking to spend a lot of time in the outback will want to install 3 point harness. These types of Jeep Cherokee parts are comfortable enough to be used on a regular road, but can be adjusted to act like a 4 point harness when trail riding to keep the driver safe and sound inside the vehicle.

Popular 8 Passenger SUVs in the Market

In the late 1990s, a new breed of vehicles came to invade the market. These were specifically aimed at large families. Until now, these cars are still popular, because they offer space that smaller ones cannot provide. SUVs only seat five people with their second row seating, but additional space allows for two or three more passengers. These vehicles provide an option for those who do not like to purchase minivans.

There are only few 8-passenger SUV manufacturers, but you can start choosing among affordable 8-passenger automobiles. As you go up the price ladder, you will see luxury SUVs. All of them are big, though. The good ones bear fuel efficient engines. Big ones also have enough space for your cargo; a big family surely will have a huge load when traveling. The best 8 passenger SUV is one that has excellent fuel efficiency, performance, mileage, and passenger friendly features. Of course, that big one will come at a big price as well.

Anyway, here are some of the popular 8-seater SUVs.

Honda Pilot

The 2011 Honda Pilot may be the most inexpensive in the market of all of these kinds of vehicles. The positive attributes of the Pilot is that it is an all-around performer, just like any Honda automobile. Of course, since it is an 8-passenger vehicle, it offers a lot of space. Then, the ergonomic design is there to ensure a comfortable and nice travel experience. The caveat is that it is not the most powerful in the league of 8-passenger SUVs. The fuel efficiency is also not something that you can boast. At 23 mpg along the highway, it lags behind the competition in terms of mileage.

Chevrolet Traverse

People who have are very interest in the car industry definitely cannot ignore the Chevrolet Traverse, which has its own pros and cons, just like everything else has. This is also one of the most inexpensive in its niche, but it has fairly good MSRP. It has also been reported to have great fuel economy and fairly good mileage at 24 mpg along highways. This vehicle is powered by its 3.6-liter V-6 engine that bestows 281 hp. There is no need to mention that it offers comfort to passengers. All cars should!

GMC Acadia 2012

This one should be part of your list. It has a similar platform as the Chevrolet Traverse, but the Acadia is more expensive. The higher cost is due to the added luxury features and more comfortable experience. Both the Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse have the same engine, but the former offers a little more horsepower and torque. The mileage is also the same; so basically, you are paying for the added luxury.

Nissan Armada

The Nissan Armada cannot be taken for granted by those looking for big SUVs. Aside from being big, it's also powerful. Armada is not the most expensive one with 8 seats in the market, but it's not within the cheap bracket either. The 5.6-liter V-8 engine gives 317 hp, but this engine has fuel efficiency that lags behind the competition. The low mileage at 19 mpg along the highway is at the lower end of the spectrum.

Ford Expedition EL

The 2012 Expedition EL replaces the long gone Excursion. The 8-passenger Expedition EL is 15 inches longer than the regular Expedition, and this extra length means extra room for more people. But when the seats are not in use, they can be folded. Like many 8-seaters, this one has average mileage.

Technical History of the Ford Escape

The Ford Escape is a compact five-passenger sport utility vehicle introduced for the 2001 model year and a direct competitor to the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V. This model is sold in front- and all-wheel-drive configurations, and is one of the most popular vehicles in the Ford stable. The 2013 edition is all-new, a vehicle that builds on the history of this popular SUV.

Escape Debut

When introduced, the 2001 Ford Escape offered a 2.0-liter four cylinder engine as standard equipment. That engine was paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and made 21 mpg city, 26 mpg highway. Optionally, a 3.0-liter V-6 engine was offered, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and delivering 16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway. Those numbers would be considered poor today compared to what compact SUVs can get.

Refreshed Escape

The first generation Ford Escape was produced for 12 model years ending in 2012. This is uncommonly long for any vehicle, but Ford refreshed the Escape in 2008 to give it a new exterior and a new interior. The mechanicals remained the same, but the base engine was now a 2.3-liter four paired with a 5-speed manual or optional 4-speed automatic transmission. This car delivered 22 mpg city, 28 mpg highway or about average for the segment. Optionally, the same 3.0-liter V-6 engine was still available, now delivering 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.

By the end of the first generation, a 2.5-liter four cylinder engine was offered, delivering 23 mpg city, 28 mpg highway. Ford paired this model with a 5-speed manual or an optional 6-speed automatic transmission. The V-6 engine was also available and paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. This model delivers 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway.

Escape Hybrid

Ford's initial foray into powertrain hybridization began in 2006 when an Escape Hybrid model was introduced. This vehicle was produced through 2012 before it was discontinued and replaced by the Ford C-MAX.

The Escape Hybrid was powered by a 2.5-liter four cylinder engine operating on the Atkinson cycle. Paired with a continuously variable transmission, a battery-powered electric motor also provides energy to turn the wheels. A nickel-metal hydride battery pack stored energy. This model delivered 34 mpg city, 31 mpg highway for best-in-class fuel economy.

Second Generation

An all-new Ford Escape has made its debut for the 2013 model year. This vehicle offers three four cylinder engine choices. Standard is a 2.5-liter four that makes 168 horsepower. Also available are a pair of EcoBoost engines, a design that brings in direct fuel injection with turbochargers. A 1.6-liter engine makes 178 horsepower and a 2.0-liter engine makes 240 horsepower. Each engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Gone are both the V-6 gas engine and the hybrid option. Front-wheel-drive is standard and all-wheel-drive is optional. Top fuel economy has been estimated at 33 mpg highway with the smallest four. The standard engine delivers 22 mpg city, 31 mpg highway.
