How To Install a Sway Bar Disconnect

Many people buy Jeep Wranglers for their great off-road abilities. Wranglers are great off-road vehicles off the lot, but to make them even better a lot of people make a range of Jeep modifications. One of the most popular mods is the installation of a sway bar disconnect system.

People who like to take their Jeep Wranglers out on off-road adventures need their suspensions to be a little looser. There are several ways to make a suspension looser, but one of the easiest is to release the sway bar underneath the Jeep when needed. Releasing the bar will allow the suspension to travel further. This extra travel that is created by this Jeep modification will allow the vehicle to maneuver over rough terrain in a smoother and safer manner.

Sway bar disconnect kits are available from most places that specialize in Jeep modifications. They are also a very easy to install for people who know their way around and under the body of a Jeep.

The first step in the process of this particular Jeep modification is to remove the factory sway bar link. In order to do this the bolt at the top of the sway will need to be removed. The next step will be to unbolt and remove the bottom of the sway bar link. Once that link is removed the next step will be to pull down on the boot and remove the top.

After the factory sway bar link has been removed the next step will be to bolt the sway bar link top using the tools that come with most sway bar disconnect kits for Jeep Wranglers. Once that is completed the next step will be to install the bottom sway bar mount.

Now the top of the disconnect will be mounted. Once this has been completed the next step will be to find a good location for the bottom of the disconnect. It is a good idea to find a place that will be out of the way when the sway bar is disconnected. After the place has been decided on a hole will need to be drilled and threaded. Once the threading is completed a bolt can then be installed. The final step in this Jeep modification will be to grease up the grease fitting and insert the lower pin.

With the disconnect system installed properly the Jeep Wrangler owner will now be able to easily disconnect the bar when they hit the trails and reconnect it when they head back on the highway. Keep in mind that driving around town without a sway bar properly connected can be very dangerous.

As most Wrangler owners know, a simple Jeep modification to their vehicle is a lot of fun, but at the end of the day all the work needs to be done properly. People who have never worked on a car before may want to take their Jeep to a local mechanic who specializes in installation of Jeep replacement parts. Or the other option is to have a buddy who is more schooled in Jeep repairs help out and explain how it is done.
